Over the course of 2009, Rachel Maddow became one of my heroes due to her unabashed and well researched pursuit of the kookiness infesting a portion of the right. I first began to pay attention to her after watching her interviewed with “therapist” Richard Cohen. He claimed to have discovered the ‘cure’ to homosexuality, wrote a book on the subject and was tied to the “Kill The Gays Bill” in Uganda.
Being one of those deviants needing curing, I was impressed in how Rachel composed herself and presented Mr. Cohen with supporting information — in his own words, directly from his book — when he tried to deny claims or deny allegations that his work, in part, lead to the creation of the bill. She didn’t back down, she never blew up and though they disagreed, I felt that Mr. Cohen was able to leave with the sense that he was given a fair go; he wasn’t brought on the show merely to serve as an outlet for Maddow and her left-wing liberal viewers rage.
Now that 2009 is over, Rachel has left us with this promise for the new year: to continue doing more of the same. She puts it much better than I and even throws in a bit of a history lesson. Check out what she has to say after the break.
